Product Description

Generic Ampicillin belongs to a group of medications known under the name of broad spectrum penicillin antibiotics. The active substance is Acillin.

Common use.

It is indicated in the treatment of infections caused by sensible bacteria at respiratory, ENT, urogenital and digestive level. It can be as well used in bacterial meningitis, endocarditis and listeriosis with sensible strains.

In high doses ampicillin may modify the glucose results in plasma and urine, as well the total serum proteins.

Administration and dosage.

Generic Ampicillin should be taken according to your prescription label. The Generic Ampicillin pills must be taken orally with a sufficient quantity of liquid half an hour before the meal or 2 hours after the meal.

The usual recommended dose for adults is 500mg at 6 hours intervals. This dose may be increased depending on the severity of the infection. It is important not to exceed a maximum of 4g per day.

The recommended dose for children is 50-100mg/kg divided in 6-8 hours intervals. Children under 6 years should be prescribed other pharmaceutical forms of Ampicillin.

Precautions and warnings.

Please take into account that during long-lasting treatment with Generic Ampicillin there is a high risk of developing bacterial and fungal superinfections.

Patients suffering from infectious mononucleosis have skin eruptions more frequently in comparison to other users.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: only a doctor can prescribe you any kind of drugs to be taken during these periods. This will be done only if possible benefits for the mother exceed any potential risk for the foetus. Ampicillin passes into mother’s milk and hence your doctor could ask you to choose either to stop breastfeeding or to stop taking Ampicillin.

Driving and machinery use: Generic Ampicillin does not affect these capacities.

Contraindications.

Generic Ampicillin should not be taken if:

  1. you have hypersensitivity to ampicillin or to any other drug component
  2. you are allergic to any other antibiotic
  3. you have infectious mononucleosis
  4. children are under 6 years of age, due to the inappropriate pharmaceutical form
  5. you have kidney and hepatic insufficiency

Side effects.

From the most frequently reported side effects we can highlight the following ones:

  1. urticaria, temporary skin eruptions
  2. fever
  3. Quincke’s disease
  4. respiratory disorders like laryngeal stridor
  5. Jarish-Herxeimer reaction in patients with typhoid fever or syphilis
  6. nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, candidosis, stomatitis
  7. leukopenia
  8. headache, vertigo, insomnia

Drug interaction.

Generic Ampicillin interacts with other antibiotics, alopurinol, oral contraceptives and probenecide. They could influence each other’s action and even cause health hazards. Therefore, it is mandatory to inform your physician about all the drugs you are currently taking, you have been taking recently or intend taking in the nearest future.

You should know that food decreases the absoprtion of ampicillin. This is why the antibiotic should be administered half an hour before the meal or 2 hours after the meal.

Missed dose.

If you forget to take one of the doses, you can take it once you remember about it. Nevertheless, if it’s time for the next intake, take only one dose and not both of them.

Overdose.

If you have ingested more Generic Ampicillin than you should have had, you could experience one or several symptoms: agitation, halucinations, encephalopathy, confusions and convulsions. In such cases you should immediately seek medical help.
