Product Description

Aralen is an antimalarial (antipaludic) medication. The active substance is Chloroquine. It may be used either to prevent or to treat malaria. It may be taken by adults and children of any age. It can also be administered to pregnant women and nursing mothers.

Common use.

Malaria is a severe disease which may cause even death if it is not treated in due time. It is caused by a strain able to infect mosquitos which feed themselves with human blood. There are not many regions on Earth where Aralen is still efficient. It is mainly used in Central America and Carribean Islands.

Administration and dosage.

Adults and children should begin taking one dose per week at least one week before travelling to areas with malaria. They should continue taking one dose per week whilst they are in the area and during four more weeks after leaving.

Precautions and warnings.

If a person has been taking Aralen for more than 5 years consecutively, then he/she should make an eye control, as it may lead to retinopathy. It is a severe disease which results in impairment or loss of vision.

Contraindications:

  1. people allergic to chloroquine
  2. people having psoriasis
  3. liver/kidney failure

Aralen Side effects.

Aralen is a quite well tolerated drug. The most frequent side effects are: abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and headaches. Sometimes it might cause itching. These side effects may be somehow alleviated if the medication is taken during the meal time.

Drug interaction.

Other drugs may interact with Aralen and cause you problems. You should inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, even those sold over the counter. Only he/she will evaluate the potential risk between one drug and another.

Missed dose.

If you missed one dose of Aralen do not take a double one in order to make up.  Take the pill as soon as you remember. Nevertheless, if it is close to the next dose time, then you should just skip this single dose. All the next doses should be adminstered as prescribed by the doctor.

Overdose.

If you took a higher dose of Aralen than prescribed, you should search for immediate help as it is very dangerous.
