Generic Cephalexin

contains Cephalexin belonging to a group of antibiotics named cephalosporines. It destroys many types of bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of their celullar wall. Therefore, it can be used for treating a big variety of diseases.

Cephalexin is very well absorbed by the body. Patients with sensible stomach can administer it even during the meals. The antibiotic is easily distributed in various tissues and fluids of the body. Cephalexin is excreted in active form through urine.

Common use.

Generic Cephalexin is recommended for treating infections caused by bacteria sensible to cephalexin, such as:

  1. respiratory tract infections
  2. ENT infections
  3. bones and joint infections
  4. dental infections
  5. urinary infections
  6. skin and soft tissues infections

Administration and dosage.

The dosage and duration of treatment depends on the infection etiology and severity, thus only a healthcare professional is in the position to establish the most suitable ones for you.


The maximum daily dose in infections with Gram-positive bacteria extremely sensible to cephalexin- 1-4g.

The total daily dose in infections with Gram-negative bacteria less sensible to cephalexin- 4-6g.

This maximum dose can be divided into 2,3 or 4 intakes.

Children and teenagers:

The usual recommended dose is 25-50mg of Generic Cephalexin/kg. If necessary, this dose can be increased till 100mg divided into 2,3 or 4 intakes.

Children aged between 6-10 years- 1 pill 3 times per day.

Children aged between 10-14 years – 1 pill 3-4 times per day.

The pills should be taken with a glass of water. The meal time is irrelevant.

For children under 6 years old other pharmaceutical forms of Cephalexin are recommended.

Precautions and warnings.

In case if you have a severe infection it is recommended to begin the treatment with injectable antibiotics.

If you begin to have persistent severe diarrhea, the reason for this could be the inflammation of the intestines or colitis caused by Clostridium difficile bacteria. In this case it is recommended to stop the treatment and consult the doctor one more time.

During long lasting treatments doctors advise regular blood and hepatic function tests. If patients have renal dysfunctions, they should check their function as well.

Please take into account that in certain conditions cephalexin may give false positive results in testing the glucose of the urine and Coomb test.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding period: you should not take any kind of drugs during these periods. Generic Cephalexin passes into mother’s milk and this could be harmful for your baby.

Driving and machinery use: the drug does not influence these capacities.


It is not recommended to take Generic Cephalexin if:

  1. you are allergic to cephalexin or to any other component of the drug
  2. you have hypersensitivity to other cephalosporines antibiotics
  3. kidney and liver disorders
  4. any other specific health condition

Side effects.

Most common adverse reactions are:

  1. diarrhea, nausea
  2. temporary skin eruptions, urticaria, itching
  3. reversible increase of hepatic enzymes
  4. headache, dizziness
  5. vaginitis
  6. fatigue

Drug interaction.

Generic Cephalexin should not be administered together with other drugs unless it was your doctor’s decision. The drugs which could interact with cephalexin are:

  1. probenecide- a drug used for decreasing the concentrations of uric acid. When taken concomitantly, cephalexin may lead to higher and prolonged concentrations of cephalexin in the blood
  2. strong diuretics or other antibiotics- it could have a negative impact on kidneys
  3. oral anticoagulants- the coagulation time might be extended
  4. diabetes drugs like metformin- may lead to extremely high concentrations of metformin

Missed dose.

In case if you forget to take your pill you can take it once you remember about it. An exception would be if it’s close time for the next scheduled dose. If this is your case, please just administer one dose.


The symptoms of an overdose are: cramps, presence of blood in the urine, stomach bug and others. You should see a doctor as soon as possible.
