Product Description

Generic Chloromycetin is a broad spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic. The active substance is Cloramphenicol. The following bacteria are sensible to this substance: chlamydia, mycoplasma, rickettsia, pneumococcus, pyogens and viridans streptococcus, enterococcus, meningococcus, salmonella typhi and other types.

Common use.

Chloromycetin is used to treat the following types of infections:

  1. typhoid and paratyphoid fever
  2. bacterial meningitis, especially with H. influenzae
  3. cerebral abscesses with anaerob bacteria
  4. abdominal infections with anaerobs
  5. exanthematic typhus and brucellosis
  6. urinary infections resistant to other antibiotics

Administration and dosage.

You should always take medications as prescribed by your doctor. The usual recommended doses of Generic Chloromycetin are:

Adults: 20-60mg of cloramphenicol/kg. Depending on the severity of the infection users could take 1-3 pills per day or a pill of 250mg at every 6 hours. The maximum daily dose should be 25g and the duration of treatment of 10-14 days.

Small children: 50mg/kg per day

Pupils (6-12 years): 30-40mg/kg per day without exceeding a total dose of 700mg/kg.

New borns: 10mg/kg/day for the 2 weeks of life and 20mg/kg for those of 2-4 weeks of age.

It is preferable to take the pills during the meals in order to avoid digestive irritations.

Precautions and warnings.

Generic Chloromycetin may affect the development of the immunity during active immunization periods.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: the drug will be administered only if the potential benefits for the mother are higher than the potential risks for the baby.

Driving and machinery use: the administration of the drug does not influence these capacities. The only exception would be if you feel bad after taking it.

Contraindications.

Generic Chloromycetin must not be administered in the conditions below:

  1. hypersensitivity to chloramphenicol or to any other component of the drug
  2. allergy to any other antibitiotics
  3. anemia
  4. kidney and liver dysfunctions
  5. any other specific disease in which Chloromycetin should not be used

Side effects.

These are some of the most common side effects which could be experienced while using Chloromycetin:

  1. headache, vertigo
  2. skin eruptions
  3. nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea
  4. leucopenia
  5. thrombocytopenia
  6. reversible toxic anemia

Drug interaction.

It is absolutely necessary to inform your doctor about the medications you are taking, including herbals and drugs sold over the counter.

Generic Chloromycetin mainly interacts with the following drugs:

  1. phenobarbital, rifampicin
  2. diuretics
  3. blood thinners or oral anticoagulants
  4. other antibotics

Missed dose.

It is not advisable to skip doses. In this regard it would be a good habit to take your drugs, especially antibiotics, at the same hour every day. In case if you forget to take your pills, you can take them as soon as you realize the omittance. The most important is not take double doses to compensate for the missed ones.

Overdose.

It could be very dangerous to take a higher dose of antibiotics than your doctor prescribed you to. The symptoms of an overdose are: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and/or diarrhea (sometimes with the presence of blood). In such cases, it is recommended to go the nearest hospital or to your treating doctor as soon as possible.
