Generic Erythromycin contains as active ingredient Erythromycin. It belongs to a group of medications named macrolides and it is used for the treatment of various infections caused by bacteria sensible to erythromycin.

Common use.

Erythromycin can be used to treat such infections as:

  1. superior respiratory tract infections (including ENT infections):
    1. sinusitis
    2. acute otitis
    3. streptococcal angina
  2. inferior respiratory tract infections:
    1. exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
    2. pneumonia caused by pneumococcus, mycoplasma and chlamydia.
  3. skin and soft tissues infections:
    1. acne
    2. infections caused by actinomycete
  4. genital-urinary infections:
    1. endocervicitis
    2. urethritis
  5. digestive system: enteritis with Campylobacter jejuni

Administration and dosage.

Users should always administer medications in accordance with the prescription label. The usual recommended dose for adults: 800mg-1g erythromycin taken each 8-12 hours. The maximum dose of erythromycin per day should not exceed 4g. For children aged between 6-12 years: the recommended dose is 30-50mg erythromycin/kg. Children under 6 years old should be prescribed erythromycin in form of a suspension, more suitable for their age.

Precautions and warnings.

Patients with hepatic insufficiency should be extremely careful when using Erythromycin since it is a drug mainly excreted by the liver. As well, cautious should be made when users administer some other drugs with toxic potential for the liver concomitantly with the antibiotic.


If any of the conditions below make reference to you please do not administer Erythromycin:

  1. hypersensitivity to erythromycin or to any other component of the antibiotic
  2. if you are undergoing a treatment with cisapride, astemizole, terfenadine
  3. kidney and liver dysfunctions

Side effects.

Like the majority of drugs Generic Erythromycin might lead to some side effects:

  1. abdominal disconfort, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, appetite loss
  2. chest pain, general malaise
  3. hearing loss, buzzing in the ears (tinnitus)
  4. skin eruptions, itching, Steven-Johnson symptom
  5. hypertension

Drug interaction.

Erythromycin interacts mainly with the following categories of drugs:

  1. astemizole, bromocriptine, ciclosporine, methylprednisolone
  2. drugs which induce CYP3A4 (an enzyme found mainly in the intestine and liver): rifampicin, carbamazapine, phenobarbital
  3. inhibitors of HMG-CoA reductase: erythromycin increases their concentrations
  4. contraceptives: there is the risk that their effect will be weakened


In order to avoid any health hazards it is important to let you doctor know about all the drugs you are using, no matter if these are herbals or purchased over the counter.

Missed dose.

The forgotten dose can be administered once the omittance is realized. The only exclusion would be if it’s close time for the next scheduled dose. In such cases doctors recommend to skip this single dose and continue as prescribed.


In case of an overdose with Generic Erythromycin you could experience such symptoms as: hearing loss, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Usually, the treatment is a symptomatic one like: gastric lavage, general measures of maintainance. You should see your physycian as soon as possible or go to the nearest hospital.
