Product Description

Furadantin is a broad spectrum antibacterial drug. It is mainly used to treat acute uncomplicated urinary infections and for preventing the appearance of recurrent urinary infections. It is active against: coliform bacilli (belonging to Klebsiella-Aerobacter strains), Staphylococcus Aureus and enterococcus. The resistance to it is developped only rarely. After oral administration it has effective concentrations only in urine.

Common use.

Acute urinary infections: bladder bacteriuria, pyelonephritis, long-lasting prophylaxis of recurrent urinary infections.

Administration and dosage.

The regular dose for adults is ½-1 pill (50 or 100 mg 4 times a day during meals for a period of 1-2 weeks. For prophylaxis: ½-1 pill every evening for a long period of time. Children over 1 year: only as the doctor prescribes.

Precautions and warnings.

People allergic to nitrofurans may have a cross-reactive immunological response to nitrofurantoins.

For the period of treatment it is highly recommended to avoid drinking alcohol. Also, you should be aware that nitrofurantoin may change the urine colour to yellow-brown.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: studies over lab animals with doses several times higher than those recommended for humans, did not highlight malformations of the embryo or embryopathy. Since no controlled studies were made on pregnant women, it is not advised to take this drug during pregnancy. It is forbidden to administrate this medication in the last trimester of pregnancy and in the 1st month of baby’s life due to high risk of hemolytic anaemia developped by the foetus/child.

Contraindications:

You should not take Furadantin if:

  1. you are allergic to nitrofurantoin or any other component
  2. you have G6PD deficit
  3. you have oliguria or anuria
  4. you have advanced kidney failure (the creatinine clearance below 30ml/min)
  5. you are in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy

Furadantin Side effects.

From all the possible side effects we can mention the following ones:

  1. digestive: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea,
  2. fever, headaches, dizziness
  3. megaloblastic anaemia
  4. leukopenia, parotiditis, hepatitis

Drug interaction.

It is not recommended to combine Furadantin with:

  1. nalidixic acid
  2. magnesium trisilicate- nitrofurantoin bioavailability decreases
  3. gastric antacids- they should be taken at least 2 hours after taking nitrofurantoin

Missed dose.

If you missed one dose of Furadantin, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the next dose time, then you should just skip the missed dose. All the next doses should be adminstered as initially prescribed by the doctor.

Furadantin Overdose.

The symptoms of an overdose are: nausea, skin rash, lower quantity of urine, seizure. In case of an overdose please see your doctor or go to the nearest hospital immediately.
