Product Description

Generic Keflex belongs to a group of antibiotics named cephalosporines. The active substance is Cephalexin.

Common use.

Keflex is recommended for the treatment of infections caused by bacteria sensible to cephalexin:

  1. respiratory infections: lungs, respiratory pathways, tonsilitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis
  2. infections localised in the middle ear
  3. soft tissues and skin infections
  4. bone and joint infections
  5. sexual organs infections
  6. urinary tract infections
  7. dental infections

Administration and dosage.

Generic Keflex, like all the drugs, should be administered in accordance with the prescription label.

The usual recommended dose for adults is 500mg of cephalexin each 6-8 hours. The dose may be increased depending on the infection etiology and severity. The maximum dose per day should not exceed 4g of cephalexin in infections with sensible strains and 6g per day in infections with less sensible strains, divided into several intakes.

In mild urinary infections, streptococcus pharyngitis and mild skin infections the dose is 500mg at 12 hours intervals or 250mg each 6 hours.

For children: the recommended dose is 25-50mg of Keflex/kg divided in 2,3 or 4 intakes. The treatment should be continued 2-5 days after the disappearance of symptomatology.

Precautions and warnings.

If you are to pass some blood or urine tests mention it to your doctor as cephalexin may modify the results.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding period: it is absolutely necessary to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Otherwise you could harm your unborn baby or the antibiotic could pass into the milk.

Driving and machinery use: cases of Generic Keflex’s influence over these capacities have not been reported.

Contraindications.

Any of the health conditions below hinder the administration of Keflex:

  1. hypersensitivity to cephalexin, cephalosporines or penicillin antibiotics
  2. hypersensitivity to any other component of the drug
  3. if you have porphyria
  4. kidney and hepatic dysfunction

Side effects.

These are the most frequently reported side effects during the treatment with Generic Keflex:

  1. In case if it is severe you should see a doctor immediately.
  2. temporary skin eruptions, itching
  3. headache
  4. fever
  5. swelling of the lips, eyelids and tongue
  6. difficulties breathing
  7. stomach pain
  8. colitis, stomach burn

Drug interaction.

Your physician should be informed regarding all other medications you are taking, no matter if they are prescription or non-prescription ones. Keflex mainly interacts with:

  1. other antibiotics, especially amphotericin, gentamycin
  2. drugs helping eliminate water from organism: furosemide, bumetanide
  3. diabetes drugs
  4. medicines for the treament of gout

Generic Keflex is not influenced by the meal time, thus you can take it when it’s more convenient for you.

Missed dose.

If you forgot to administer one of the doses, you can take it once you realize the omission. Nonetheless, if it’s soon time for the next intake, it would be better to just skip this dose, in order to avoid taking double doses.

Overdose.

Taking a higher dose of any drug may have severe consequences. If you have ingested more cephalexin than you were prescribed, you should go to the nearest hospital. The symptoms of an overdose are: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and presence of the blood in the urine.
