Product Description

Lumigan eye drops belongs to a group of medications used for lowering the intraocular pressure. It is a clear ophtalmic solution having as active ingredient Bimatoprost.

Common use.

Lumigan eye drops is a drug prescribed mainly for adults with open-angle chronic glaucoma and eye hypertension.

Lumigan eye drops may be used as a monotherapy or in combination with other ophtalmic beta blocker drops. The principle of action consists in favouring the draining of the liquid inside the eye. As a consequence the intraocular pressure is reduced and the risk of injuries is lowered.

The increase of intraocular pressure causes injuries of the retina and of the optic nerve which passes signals from the eye to the brain. In this way, patients may notice a serious decrease of their vision or even its loss.

Administration and dosage.

The recommended dose is of 1 drop in the affected eye(s) once a day, preferably in the evening. The dose should not be exceeded, as the effect of the medication will become weaker. If patients use some other eye drops besides Lumigan eyedrops, they should be administered at least 10 minutes apart.

Precautions and warnings.

Lumigan eyedrops contains benzalkonium chloride which fades soft contact lenses. Patients who wear lenses should be very careful in this regard. They should remove their lenses before using the eye drops. Within 15 minutes they can put them back.

Driving and machinery use: Lumigan has an insignificant influence over the ability to drive and use machinery. As in the case of other eye drops, if patients have blurred vision, they should allow enough time for this symptom to pass. Afterwards, they can continue their usual activities.

If any of the conditions below make reference to you, it is recommended not to administer Lumigan, unless authorized by your doctor:

  • hypersensitivity to bimatoprost
  • people who previously had severe reactions to products containing benzalkonium chloride
  • children under 18 years old
  • hepatic and renal dysfunctions
  • upper respiratory tract disorders
  • pregnant women

Side effects.

From the most frequently Lumigan eye drops side effects we can mention the following ones:

  • conjunctival hyperemia- increased blood supply to the eye(s) leading to its (their) reddening
  • growth of the lashes
  • darkening of the skin around eyelids
  • ocular prurit or itching
  • bacterial keratitis- inflammation of the cornea
  • blurred vision
  • increased lacrimation
  • increased sensitivity to lighyt or photophobia
  • headaches
  • asthenia

Drug interaction.

Severe drug interactions have not been noticed. The reason for this relies mainly in the fact that bimatoprost is biotransformed by numerous metabolic pathways with the help of various enzymes. Thus, the hepatic enzymes involved in drug metabolism process were not affected.

Missed dose.

If you forget to administer the eye drops in the evening, you can do it as soon as you remember about it.

In case of an overdose the treatment is usually a symptomatic one. Nevertheless, if symptoms do not go away, ask for medical help.
