Product Description

Generic Suprax is a semi-synthetic antibiotic belonging to the 3rd generation of cephalosporins with a broad spectrum action. This drug manifests bactericide action and the main mechanism consists in inhibiting the synthesis of bacteria cell walls.

Common use

The active substance is Cefixime. Generic Suprax is used to treat bacterial infections of various severity degree caused by strains sensible to Cefixime:

  1. superior and inferior respiratory tract: acute bronchitis and exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, bacterial pneumonia, pharyngitis, tonsillitis (especially recurrent and/or chronic ones), sinusitis and acute otitis
  2. urinal tract infections: acute pyelonephritis without urethritis, lower, complicated or not, urinary infections, excluding prostatitis; gonococcal urethritis (experienced by men).

Administration and dosage

Children under 12 years should administer Generic Suprax in syrup form. For children over 12 years and adults the nycthemeral dose is 400mg taken once or 2 times by 200 mg each. The average treatment time is 7-10 days. In cases when the disease was caused by Streptococcus pyogenes the treatment will last at least 10 days. Patients with kidney function disorders having creatinine clearing of 21-60ml/min, the nycthemeral dose will be reduced by 25%.

Precautions and warnings

Generic Suprax will be administered carefully by elder patients, those with cronic liver failure. Patients with previous reactions to penicillin may experience hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporin antibiotics.

Taking this drug for a long period may lead to dysregulation of intestinal flora and consequently to diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis.

Contraindications

The main contraindications are hypersensitivity to drug components and children under 6 months of age.

Side effects

Like any drug, Generic Suprax may cause side effects:

  1. allergical reactions: urticaria, skin hyperemesis, fever, Stevens-Johnson syndrom, Lyell syndrom, anaphylactic shock
  2. nervous system reactions: vertigo, headache, tinnitus
  3. digestive system: anorexia, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, candida, abdominal pain, flatulence
  4. haematological system: leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic and aplastic anaemia, bleeding
  5. urogenital system: interstitial nephritis, incidence upon kidney function, vaginitis

Drug interaction

Generic Suprax may interact with:

  1. allopurinol, diuretics- as a result the elimination of cefixime through kidney takes place slower and this may lead to an increase of plasmatic urine concentration
  2. antacids containing magnesium or aluminium hydroxid reduce cefixime absorption
  3. anticoagulants- cefixime reduces prothrombin index, thus potentiating the action of indirect anticoagulants

Missed dose.

If you missed one dose of Generic Suprax, take as soon as you remember about it and all of the next doses should be adminstered as initially prescribed.

Overdose.

In case of an overdose please see your doctor or go to the nearest hospital immediately.
