Product Description

Generic Vantin is a cephalosporine antibiotic. The active substance is Cefpodoxime. It is available in 2 concentrations: 100mg and 200mg.

Common use.

Generic Vantin is used for the treatment of bacterial infections, such as:

  1. infections of the nose, sinuses (sinusitis)
  2. throat infections
    1. tonsilitis
    2. pharyngitis
  3. chest and lungs infections
    1. bronchitis
    2. pneumonia
  4. skin infections
    1. abscesses
    2. ulcers
    3. infected wounds
    4. celullitis
  5. urinary tract system (cistitis and kidney infections)
  6. sexually transmitted infections (gonorrhea)

Administration and dosage.

Always administer Vantin as prescribed by your physician. In case if you hesitate or you consider that the dosage is either too strong or too weak for you, discuss these details with your doctor.

It is preferable to take Generic Vantin during the meals, as food favours the absorption of cefpodoxime by the body.

The usual recommended dose for adults is 100mg-200mg once or twice a day. The dosage and duration of treatment depends on the severity of the infection and its etiology.

Children between 6-12 years: 8mg/kg/day divided into 2 intakes. Only those children who weigh over 25kg could administer this antibiotic.

Children under 6 years should be prescribed other pharmaceutical forms of the drug.

Precautions and warnings.

If your treating doctor informed you that you have intolerance to glucose, please ask him/her whether it would be suitable for you to administer this drug.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: if you are pregnant, suppose you could be pregnant or you intend to get pregnant, it is not recommended to administer Generic Vantin, unless prescribed by your treating doctor.

Driving and machinery use: after the administration of Vantin you could feel dizzy. If this happened to you, please do not drive and/or use any kind of machineries.


If any of the health conditions below make reference to you, Generic Vantin must not be administered:

  1. hypersensitivity to cefpodoxime or to any other substance present in the drug (for example lactose)
  2. if you had previously had allergy to any antibiotic
  3. kidney and liver dysfunction
  4. if you have ever had colitis

Side effects.

Some of the most frequently met adverse reactions resulting from the administration of Generic Vantin are:

  1. nausea and vomiting
  2. abdominal pain
  3. diarrhea
  4. headaches
  5. dizziness and confusion
  6. skin eruptions, itching
  7. buzzing in the ears (tinnitus)

If any of the symptoms becomes worse, please contact a doctor at once.

Drug interaction.

Generic Vantin interacts with the following categories of drugs:

  1. antacids- used for the treatment of indigestion
  2. drugs for treating stomach ulcers (ranitidine, cimetidine)
  3. diuretics
  4. probenecide
  5. blood thinners
  6. oral contraceptives

Missed dose.

In order not to have missed doses it is a good habit to administer the antibiotics (and not only) at the same hour every day. If you forgot to take one of your doses, you can take it once you remember about it. In case if it’s time for the next scheduled intake, just skip the omitted one and continue as initially scheduled.


Taking higher doses of any kind of medications could make you be confused, dizzy or nauseous. If you overdosed Vantin you should go to the nearest hospital or to your treating doctor.
